CRUK shop burgled after tweeting about raising £2,000

The shop on Lewisham High Street in London lost £40 in cash, but estimates that closing for two days to fix a door broken during the crime cost it £1,200 in lost takings

A Cancer Research UK charity shop in London was burgled earlier this month after staff shared a picture of the money it raised for the World Cancer Day fundraising campaign on Twitter.

On 4 February, when its staff were involved in fundraising for the day, the Twitter account of the CRUK shop based on Lewisham High Street in south-east London tweeted a picture of the cash alongside a caption saying "Thank you London! What an amazingly generous city you are.

A second tweet, retweeted by the shop’s assistant manager, Hayley Thorpe, told the shop’s 236 Twitter followers that almost £2,000 had been raised by the shop’s supporters that day.

Two days later, on the night of 6 February, the shop was broken into by a burglar who stole about £40.

Clementine Tuyisenge, a part-time assistant at the shop, told Third Sector it was possible the person targeted the shop because of the tweet. "I think it drew attention," she said. "You have to be very careful sometimes."

She said the manager and assistant manager of the shop were in charge of the account.

On 8 February, the CRUK shop tweeted: "Not a good start to our week. The shop being broken into. Luckily they didn't get much just made a mess and caused some damage."

Tuyisenge said the burglar appeared to have entered the shop through the fire exit, which had been broken. The person took £40 that was kept in a tin, but did not find the £2,000, which was stored in a safe elsewhere on the premises. Instead, they damaged the shop’s CCTV equipment, stealing a monitor attached to the CCTV.

Tuyisenge said the shop was forced to remain closed for two days after the burglary while the broken door was fixed, causing it to miss out on an estimated £1,200 of trade.

She said the police had come to take fingerprints after the burglary occurred but had yet to find the culprit.
