Curtain call

A new professional opera company, Streetwise Opera, has been launched to empower homeless men and women and to restore their confidence and self-esteem through opera. Streetwise Opera staged Benjamin Britten's Canticles, with professional company Tete-a-Tete. Around 100 homeless people from homeless centres around London featured in the production and attended workshops held over 12 weeks beginning in March. The project culminated with performances in Westminster Abbey on 21 and 23 May as part of the London Golden Jubilee String of Pearls Festival.
