David Harewood backs new range of Cafod Christmas gifts

- The Homeland actor David Harewood has given his backing to the new range of Christmas gifts from the aid agency Cafod. Harewood, who is an ambassador for the charity, met a family in Kenya who had received goats funded by it. "I know it's a fun idea - to give someone a chicken or a goat for Christmas - but it's also a life-changing gesture for someone living in extreme poverty," he said.

- The Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding has become an ambassador for Save the Children. She donated the prize of a role in her new book, Bridget Jones: Mad about the Boy, at a recent fundraising event for the charity. The cameo was won by Farzia Seth.

- Andrea Begley (right)Andrea Begley, this year's winner of the TV talent show The Voice, visited Joseph Clarke School in Waltham Forest, east London, to lead a music workshop for a group of blind and partially sighted children before Read for RNIB day, which took place on 11 October. Begley, who is partially sighted, has become an ambassador for the annual campaign, set up to make reading more accessible for people with sight loss.

- The history and wildlife presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff has been elected as the new president of the conservation charity RSPB. She takes over from the presenter Kate Humble, who has been in the role for four years. "The charity's aims and beliefs fit with my own," said Krestovnikoff.

- The sports presenter Steve Rider has recorded a series of questions for the Exeter Leukaemia Fund's Challenge Exmouth quiz night, which will take place on 16 October. Rider, who is a patron of the charity in Devon, recorded the questions for the sports round. "It was my brother's cancer in the late 1990s that brought me in contact with ELF, and his long-term requirements mean that ELF has become a vital part of his life," Rider said.
