Diabetes UK told to apologise after breaking fundraising rules

Diabetes UK has been told to apologise to supporters after it broke fundraising rules during a campaign. The Fundraising Standards Board recommended the charity publish an apology on its website after several infringements during a campaign run with the telephone agency Listen Fundraising. Diabetes UK's pedometer campaign, which ran from November 2013 to February 2014, was found to have breached four clauses of the Institute of Fundraising's Code of Fundraising Practice, according to an adjudication by the FRSB.

The RNLI is introducing an opt-in-only policy for its communications, which it predicts will lose the charity £36m in income over the next five years. From 1 January 2017, the lifeboats charity will not contact individuals by phone, email or post unless they have expressly given their consent for the charity to do so, a move that the RNLI says will cost it an amount equivalent to 19 per cent of the charity's £190m income of 2014.

Tributes have been paid to Liz Monks, the former director of fundraising at the Alzheimer's Society, who has died of cancer, aged 48. Monks, who had a career in the charity sector spanning more than 20 years, died after a 12-month battle with small-cell neuroendocrine cancer. She was director of supporter relations and fundraising at Breast Cancer Campaign (now Breast Cancer Now) for seven years, before becoming director of fundraising at the Alzheimer's Society in 2012. She is survived by her civil partner.

The UK has risen one place to become the most generous country in Europe and the sixth most generous in the world, according to the Charities Aid Foundation's World Giving Index 2015. The sixth edition is based on interviews with more than 150,000 people in 145 countries by the polling company Gallup. It established three percentage scores: the proportion of those who in the past month had given money to charity, volunteered their time or helped a stranger. With an average score of 66 per cent, the number one position was taken by Myanmar. The UK came sixth with 57 per cent. The UK was in joint seventh place with Malaysia in the 2014 index.
