Dog charity honours canine screen idols

London's Battersea Park hosted a unique celebrity event today - but the only wags in evidence belonged to a pack of pooches. The excited hounds were attending the inauguration of a dog walk of fame, established by the Kennel Club and television channel Sky Movies in honour of legendary dogs of the silver screen.

Residents of the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home were joined by celebrity dogs such as Wellard from EastEnders to watch the first dogs being inducted. Those honoured include Lassie, Gromit, Greyfriars Bobby, Bullseye from Oliver!, Toto from The Wizard of Oz, Fang from the Harry Potter films and Chance and Shadow from Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

The iconic canines, chosen by members of the public in an online vote, will be honoured with plaques on benches around Battersea Park’s bandstand. A spokeswoman for the Kennel Club said all the costs were being met by Sky, which used the event to promote its new Sky Movies Family channel.

“Sky wanted to promote its new channel and we wanted to publicise our Discover Dogs exhibition this weekend, so it was a good fit,” she said. “It is good to work with organisations, such as Sky, that have money.”

A sequence of dog films will be shown on the recently launched Sky Movies Family channel over the weekend to coincide with Discover Dogs, which is being held at London’s Earl’s Court.

New names will be added to the dog walk of fame every year.
