The alcohol education charity Drinkaware has appointed Karen Tyrell as its next chief executive.
Tyrell, who has spent the past two and a half years as executive director of strategy, culture and external affairs at the support charity Humankind, succeeds Elaine Hindal, who stepped down last year to take up the top job at the British Nutrition Foundation.
Tyrell has also held senior roles at the support charity Addaction (now called We Are With You), is vice-chair at the social care charity Avalon Group and was a trustee at the race equality think tank The Runnymede Trust.
She said: “With my background in partnerships and collaboration, I am looking forward to helping shape Drinkaware’s strategic direction and to increasing its reach as the authoritative voice on alcohol issues.
“Leading the fantastic Drinkaware team, working with new stakeholders and continuing to deliver initiatives that reduce the harm faced by people who use alcohol will be at the heart of what I do.
“We are entering a crucial period and I feel honoured to have the opportunity to lead such an influential organisation at this time.”
Shān Nicholas has been interim chief executive since November 2021.
Tyrell will take up her new role in October.
