The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared details of a planned charitable foundation named Archewell, after The Daily Telegraph published new information relating to the organisation.

According to various reports, the couple filed paperwork in the US last month containing plans for a new charity and volunteering service, as well as a website and “education and training materials” that focus on a range of areas including social and emotional care.

The pair said the name of the foundation was derived from the Greek word “arche”, which translates as “source of action”.

The couple broke away from the Royal Foundation, the charity they oversaw with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, in June last year.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the plans for Archewell are more extensive than those originally intended under the Sussex Royal Brand, a trademark they had used before stepping back from the royal family earlier this year.

The filed paperwork indicates that ambitions for the not-for-profit could include “organising and conducting support groups for persons in need”, “emotional counselling” and “coordinating social, personal care and psychological services”.

In a response to theTelegraph story, the pair said their current focus was supporting efforts to combat the global coronavirus pandemic, but they had felt “compelled” to reveal details of the not-for-profit’s name.

“Before SussexRoyal came the idea of ‘Arche’, the Greek word meaning ‘source of action’,” they said.

“We connected to this concept for the charitable organisation we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name: to do something of meaning, to do something that matters.

“Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon.

We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right."
