eBay auction site raises more than £1m for charities

Online auction house eBay raised more than £1 million in 2001 through its charity auctions.

Charities including the Red Cross, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Amnesty International, as well as local organisations such as Leicester Royal Infirmary, all ran auctions through the site.

Successful fundraising auctions included a bid for celebrity handbags organised in aid of Breast Cancer Care. A sale of handbags belonging to celebrities including Cherie Booth and Jerry Hall raised more than £100,000.

"Our expertise in hosting charity auctions means we can offer the very best support to charities large and small by promoting them extensively on the site,

said Jennie Reed, eBay UK's marketing communications manager.

"Charities are given space to build their profiles on eBay,

she added.
