eBay for Charity raised £22.5m for charities in 2018

Giving averaged £60,000 a month, the online giving platform says

Donations worth £22.5m were raised by eBay for Charity UK last year, the latest figures show.

The online giving platform said in a statement that giving averaged £60,000 a month, with the most popular causes among online shoppers being those for animals, cancer, children and military veterans. January gave rise to the highest amount of donations.

eBay said research carried out last year had shown that about three-quarters of charity retailers used its platform to sell their donated goods. As a result, 90 per cent of the total funds were raised by more than 3,300 charities selling directly on the site in 2018, according to eBay. 

The online platform partnered with a range of companies at the 2018 Golden Globes in January last year, including Condé Nast and Time’s Up, to auction clothes worn by celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson. And in July eBay supported the LGBT youth homelessness charity the Albert Kennedy Trust to celebrate Pride, with exclusive merchandise designed by Henry Holland as well as adidas Samba trainers customised by the likes of David Beckham, Elton John and Marc Jacobs.

Other celebrities were involved with fundraising, including Phillip Schofield, Emma Willis and Tim Henman, who supported eBay’s inaugural Give Day on 9 October with exclusive auctions. A 5p donation was made for every item shoppers put in their baskets, and more than £105,000 raised for the Prince’s Trust.

In November eBay experienced an increase in sales by charities as part of its eBay for Charity programme. Cancer Research UK’s sales grew by 530 per cent year on year, and Sue Ryder experienced an average 203 per cent year-on-year increase in sales.

"2019 is already shaping up to be exciting for us as we look to reach £150m in funds raised by the end of the year."
