Action on Addiction is demanding the Government provide an 'alcohol nurse' in every hospital, on the eve of tomorrow's introduction of extended pub opening hours.
"Alcohol misuse isn't just a social disorder issue, it's a national health crisis," said Lesley King-Lewis, chief executive of Action on Addiction.
A spokeswoman for the charity said "a handful" of alcohol nurses had been piloted in hospitals nationwide, with great success. The nurses arrange to meet and talk with binge-drinking casualties 24 hours after they are treated.
The idea is one of three mooted in the charity's first- ever lobbying campaign. The others are for the Government to tax wine and beer according to alcohol content, and for it to fund research into the effectiveness of clearer warning labels.
