Finance News: Charities recognised for online presentation of their accounts

Joe Gill

CAF and the Institute of Chartered Accountants have announced the winners of the online charity account awards as Weston Spirit, Young Minds Trust, St Anne's Soho and the Second 1st Hurst Scout Group.

The accounts were judged on their compliance with the Sorp, and their accuracy and usability. The £2,000 awards were made in four income categories.

In descending order of income, youth charity Weston Spirit stood out because of its cutting edge use of HTML; mental-health charity Young Minds Trust for clarity in setting out the accounts; and homelessness charity St Anne's for technical presentation and design. The Scout Group stood out not only among low income charities but also against larger charities for quality and accessibility.

"Second 1st Hurst Scout Group is a really tiny charity, but their website was just fantastic, intuitive, bright and engaging, and the information presented was just what you needed to know," said judge Brian Bannister.

Bannister, director of public affairs at Pricewaterhousecoopers, said small charities were still setting an example for many larger charities with simple, low-cost presentation of reports and accounts: "Particularly in the very small charity sector, we saw best practice and the most innovation."

He said some larger charities were still simply posting the hard copy version of their annual report as a PDF file - which meant visitors would have to plough through very large documents - rather than making best use of the medium.
