The Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) has welcomed the appointment of John Healey as economic secretary to the Treasury.
He replaces Paul Boateng and will have responsibility for charity taxation and the cross-cutting review of the voluntary sector and public services.
Healey has a voluntary-sector background, working as a campaigner for Radar and Mind, and with the RNID under then chief executive Stuart Etherington.
CFDG's director Shirley Scott said: "We are delighted that the responsibility for charity taxation has stayed with an individual who has such a clear interest and background in the sector.
"Let's hope that the new minister will fight the corner for the charity sector in the Treasury and gets stuck in specifically on the issues of irrecoverable VAT and the impact of the increase in National Insurance on charities."
