First 250 Modernisation Fund recipients decided by Capacitybuilders

They will receive £1,000 each for training in how to survive the recession

Infrastructure quango Capacitybuilders has identified 250 organisations that will receive the first grants from the £1m Modernisation Fund, which is aimed at strengthening third sector organisations during the recession.

The successful applicants will receive £1,000 each in bursaries, which will buy two days' professional advice on how to become more resilient during the recession. The training will explore the possibility of forming partnerships with other organisations to strengthen services.

A second phase of the programme, due to launch in the autumn, will offer bursary holders access to additional funding of up to £10,000 to consider forming collaborations or merging with other organisations.

A Capacitybuilders spokeswoman said there had been particular interest from organisations providing advice to young adults and people with mental health issues. She said she was unable to release the names of the organisations that would benefit without first gaining permission from them.

The funding is part of the Government's £16.5m Real Help for Communities action plan to support community organisations across England.

Organisations can continue to apply for grants until 17 July.
