Focus: Corporate Responsibility - Side by side - The Prince's Trust and the Royal Bank of Scotland

The Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) began its partnership with the Prince's Trust in 2001 with a donation of £3.7m, committing a further £5m three years later. RBS companies also contribute through employee volunteering and fundraising - more than 1,200 employees have volunteered to date.

ILONA HALE, Royal Bank of Scotland project manager, the Prince's Trust

Why did you choose this partnership?

We share common goals, including a desire to help the less advantaged in the community and address major social exclusion issues.

How do you benefit from it?

RBS's financial contributions support our core activities and we also benefit from the time and expertise of its staff. We are now piloting new programmes aimed at creating job opportunities for young people who have no qualifications.

Did you have any reservations at first?

None. RBS is a great partner to work with because it is professional, positive and innovative.

What are your plans for the partnership?

This year we hope to work with RBS on our 30th anniversary celebrations and, more generally, to build on the success of its employee involvement scheme.

STEPHEN MOIR, group community investment manager, Royal Bank of Scotland

Why did you choose this partnership?

We already had a long-standing but small-scale relationship with the trust, so we knew it would use our investment well.

How do you benefit from it?

A virtuous cycle is created where employees volunteer, feel great about doing it and build their skill-base simultaneously. We've seen a real increase in demand for group volunteering as people realise it's a great way to build team spirit.

Did you have any reservations at first?

At the start, it's natural for both partners to share a nervousness. But we quickly realised that the partnership was going to work.

What are your plans for the partnership?

We want to build on the core relationship by linking programmes into our sports sponsorships - we're already doing NatWest Cricket and RBS Six Nations rugby.
