Funding available for waste projects

The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts is inviting community and voluntary organisations to apply for grants for waste-management projects. It is managing a partnership with the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which has funding of £3m.

Applicants are being urged to send in expressions of interest by 4 January and full applications by 31 March.

John Burns, the head of waste implementation at Defra, said the community sector was already involved in the sustainable management of waste in England, and the scheme was designed to develop this further.

Louise Owens, who is managing the partnership at the society, said: "It will be very broad and flexible. The scheme will look particularly at projects and partnerships with local authorities and the private sector to try new methods of working to engage the public."

Projects eligible for funding include awareness raising, composting, business planning, waste management development, infrastructure and feasibility studies.
