Fundraising: Five marathons for Diabetes UK

A student with diabetes is attempting five marathons in five weeks to raise money for Diabetes UK, which is working to find a cure for the illness.

Gary Blakie, a 21-year-old from Sunderland, who has type-1 diabetes, started with his first race on Sunday in Barcelona and finishes with the London Marathon on 23 April.

He is taking on the challenge to prove that people with diabetes can lead active and adventurous lifestyles just like anyone else.

Although he has never taken part in a marathon before, he has completed the Great North Run six times.

Blakie said: "I'm totally focused on obliterating any preconception about diabetes by proving that not only can you lead a normal life with the condition, but you can also accomplish things that even top-level athletes would be proud of."

He hopes to raise more than £3,000 for the charity through his Justgiving website.
