FUNDRAISING NEWS: Bird society to use funds for research

The British Trust for Ornithology is running a campaign to raise £100,000 from members and new supporters to fund research into the decline of the British sparrow.

The trust hopes to raise half of the money through a mail-out to members and the rest through a media-led campaign. The charity is targeting national newspapers including The Independent, which has run a large piece on the plight of the sparrow.

The House Sparrow Appeal will fund research looking at reasons for the decline in the sparrow population. Volunteers already contribute more than one million hours to monitoring projects.
