Fundraising News: Funds boost for blind sport group

A corporate sponsorship deal for British Blind Sport has proved a double boon for the charity, because it has meant it can also access extra money from a government match-funding scheme.

British Blind Sport has received a total of £39,000 from Masterfoods UK and Sportsmatch, the Government's business sponsorship incentive scheme for grass-roots sport. Sportsmatch is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and matches commercial investment in community sports programmes.

Georgina Hare, head of fundraising at British Blind Sport, said that it can be a struggle for disability sports organisations to secure sponsorship because they don't attract much media coverage. But this deal demonstrates that progress is being made, she said.

Since 1999, Sportsmatch has supported 2,491 sports groups. Of these, 241 were disability groups, 821 were projects that "cater for disabilities" and the remainder were non-disability groups.
