Fundraising News: Grants

Sian Slater, capital campaign director ...

What is the project and when will it start? The Autograph Association of Black Photographers has joined forces with us to build an arts centre in Shoreditch, London. The one-off grant is towards the capital costs of ensuring that Rivington Place is accessible to disabled people. The funding was one of 19 fast-track grants before the programme was suspended on 1 October. We received £5m from Arts Council England for the main building, which makes it the first newly built, lottery-funded visual arts space to support culturally diverse arts.

Do you need further funding to set up the project? Since launching the scheme in October 2003, we have raised £380,000 out of a total fundraising target of £1.52m. We also require £53,000 to complete the accessibility costs to widen the corridors for wheelchairs and create disabled car parking.

How many trusts or foundations did you apply to for this funding? There is very little funding available for this type of project, which is why our first grant from the trust at the first time of asking is so important.

The Disability Discrimination Act has made disabled access a statutory requirement, but there is no government funding and I haven't found any other trusts to fund this.

Was the application a simple process? Yes. The trust's grants officer was very approachable and was very clear about the process. It is very refreshing that this trust identified the need and quickly helped charities to achieve it.
