Fundraising News: Grants

The trust works with young people, including young offenders, who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless

What is the project and when is it scheduled to start? The grant will support three projects run by the Depaul Trust in the north east in three young offender institutions. It will enable us to provide resettlement support and recruit, train and support volunteer mentors who work with young offenders.

Do you need further funding to set up the project? The work is ongoing and the Northern Rock money matches funding we have already secured. It is really helpful that the foundation is prepared to fund existing as well as new work.

How many grant makers did you apply to for this funding? We only approached the foundation to fund this aspect of the work. Other funders include the Homelessness Directorate, the Youth Justice Board and the Rank Foundation.

Is this your first grant from the Northern Rock Foundation? Yes, although we also applied to its small grants programme for funding for a feasibility study into establishing a supported business, which was also successful.

Was the application a simple process? It was the model of good practice.

The guidelines are clear, available online or by post. We rang the foundation before we made the application and found its staff approachable and willing to answer our questions. The assessment process was transparent and didn't take much time.
