Fundraising News: Henry Smith spells out giving options

A grant-making charity set up in 1628 for the relief and ransom of the victims of Turkish pirates has reviewed its guidelines for charitable giving, specifying the kinds of medical research it will support.

Henry Smith Charity director Richard Hopgood said the medical programme had hitherto been a generalist fund in terms of medical research: "The only thing we haven't funded is cancer research."

Now it has introduced categories so it can relate its medical research grants to other objectives of the charity, including hospice and hospital care for the needy, and for institutions providing medical assistance.

Its grant budget this year was £21.7m, all from investment income based on an original bequest of £2,000.
