FUNDRAISING NEWS: Literacy charity to fund book scheme by selling badges

The National Literacy Trust's Reading is Fundamental initiative is hoping to raise £38,000 through the sale of a set of collectable pin badges for children.

The badges, which feature animated character Clifford the Big Red Dog from CBBC and Scholastic books, will go on sale in branches of Halifax and Bank of Scotland during August and in Borders stores in September.

There will be three different designs to collect, and each badge will cost £1, with 70p going directly to the Reading is Fundamental campaign.

The money raised will be used to fund the charity's book scheme, which aims to donate three books a year to thousands of needy children.

"We work in partnership with government initiatives to target socially deprived areas," said Reading is Fundamental director Lis Coulthard. "We work primarily with schools, but also with other groups including children's projects, women's refuges, travellers and young offenders and their children."

The scheme is run in collaboration with several large publishing groups which offer books at a reduced rate.
