Fundraising News: Livingstone backs gay asylum group

The Mayor of London hosted a fundraiser for the UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group at the City Hall earlier this month to highlight the difficulties faced by those claiming asylum because of persecution on the grounds of sexuality.

The group was founded in 1993 to campaign for the right of gay and lesbian asylum seekers to bring same-sex partners to live with them, and the the asylum system has since been changed to recognise this right.

Proving the persecution of individuals is now the main focus of the group's work.

The group, which was formerly Stonewall's Immigration Group until it became independent a year ago, runs a volunteer helpline and provides legal advice to asylum seekers.
