Macmillan Cancer Relief will be able to fund nine new nursing posts after it exceeded its £1m target by almost £300,000 in its first year as charity partner of the HBOS Foundation, the charitable arm of the HBOS banking group.
The £1.3m total will be used to fund nine nursing posts in UK cities, one more than targeted.
Throughout last year, HBOS employees from Halifax, Bank of Scotland, Birmingham Midshires, Clerical Medical and Intelligent Finance, organised a range of fundraising activities including rowing across the Atlantic, a walk along Hadrian's Wall, branch-to-branch cycle rides and golf days.
Peter Cardy, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Relief, said: "A million thanks to all the staff across HBOS for really getting behind the campaign and raising such a fantastic amount of money. The nine new Macmillan nurses will enable us to help an extra 4,500 people hit by the bombshell of a cancer diagnosis each year."
The nine positions will be filled in Belfast, Bradford, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Middlesex during 2004. They will join around 2,000 other Macmillan nurses already in place in the UK.
