Fundraising News: Online sponsorship site triples income at Heart Foundation

A new online sponsorship programme has tripled donations to the British Heart Foundation since its launch in January.

Online donations have increased from £500 to £1,500 a day, with sponsorship pages accounting for £1,000 of daily donations.

The system was developed in-house to make events sponsorship easier for fundraisers and givers.

The British Heart Foundation is one of the few charities to have developed such a system in-house, with many using off-the-shelf, paid-for systems such as Justgiving, which has 500 members.

The charity's online manager Bertrand Bosredon, said: "This online system makes sponsoring our fundraisers easy and saves a lot of hassle for everyone involved.

"The take-up has so far been incredible, with more than 1,200 fundraisers creating a sponsorship page on the site."

James Grieves at Justgiving said that online sponsorship for the 2004 London Marathon was £2.7m to date, up from £9,000 in 2001.
