The British Red Cross is launching two fundraising appeals to mark the anniversary of 11 September.
In the second week of September, the charity is asking people to log onto its web site and donate an hour of their salary for the Just One Hour appeal. More than 45 businesses, including Royal & Sun Alliance, Hitachi Europe and Standard Chartered Bank, have agreed to encourage staff and customers to get involved in the scheme.
Banner advertisements on internet search engines and sites such as lycos.com and lastminute.com will also drive customers through to the web site.
"We haven't set any financial targets for the Just One Hour appeal because this is such a unique event,
said Jeremy Hughes, director of marketing and income generation at the British Red Cross.
"We felt that it was appropriate for the Red Cross to reiterate that we need to ensure that we're ready to respond to similar disasters as they happen."
The British Red Cross is also running the "Dine for Humanity
appeal across 100 UK restaurants, asking diners to add a donation of £1 to their bill. All money raised by the campaign will go into the charity's disaster fund.
