Fundraising News: Sigrid Rausing top grant-maker to UK women's charities

The Sigrid Rausing Trust gave £2.7m to projects helping women during 2003, making it the largest grant maker to organisations supporting women in the UK.

The trust, which benefits from the wealth of the Tetrapak family empire, was listed as the third largest charity donor in The Sunday Times Rich List. The trust made more than 105 grants in 2003, totalling £10m.

Womankind Worldwide is the latest agency to be awarded a grant from the trust towards its international work on gender equality. The £275,000 donation will be devoted to programmes tackling violence against women in South Africa and to giving a voice to women in Afghanistan's reconstruction.

The money will also support a communications campaign to raise the profile of the charity.

Sigrid Rausing, chairman of trustees, said: "We regard women's issues as a key aspect of human rights, and one which is often neglected, both by NGOs and by international politics."

More than £700,000 of the grants went to charities working with the victims of domestic violence.
