FUNDRAISING NEWS: Somerfield names dystrophy body as charity of the year

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign has landed a £1 million charity of the year partnership that will significantly boost its annual fundraising income.

Supermarket chain Somerfield has pledged to raise more than £1 million by the end of the year-long partnership through in-store, customer and employee fundraising initiatives.

Planned activities include a range of events such as dragon boat racing and a charity ball, and the charity's logo will appear on Somerfield shopping bags.

"A charity of our size would never be able to get to this wide an audience or generate this kind of money without the support of a major corporate sponsor," said Christine Cryne, executive director of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. "This is the biggest partnership we've ever had and will make a significant difference to what we are able to do.

"Many people come across us accidentally but now we'll have a much broader profile."
