Action Against Addiction has launched a new fundraising initiative to raise £100,000 to fund research into the root causes of substance addiction.
The charity's Sport Against Addiction campaign has secured the support of former leading sports stars including the runner Roger Black, cricketer Mike Gatting and swimmer Sharron Davies.
The launch on 9 May will raise funds through an auction of sports items including signed David Beckham memorabilia.
Bidders will also pay for the chance to play snooker with Steve Davis or a game of rugby with Lawrence Dallaglio.
"Although one in three adults suffer from addiction, not enough research is being done into the root causes,
said Lesley King-Lewis, chief executive at Action Against Addiction.
"Young people look up to sports stars as role models, and with this campaign we're trying to open a window into the issue of addiction and show that even the sporting world is afflicted by substance abuse,
Sport Against Addiction is chaired by a committee that includes celebrities Sir David Frost and Michael Parkinson.
