FUNDRAISING NEWS: WHY WE GIVE - Dominic Fry, group director of corporate communications, Scottish Power

How much do you give per year? Scottish Power gives approximately £10 million to six areas: the arts, the community, charities, the environment, the economy and education. Because half of Scottish Power's business is in the US, we give a lot to projects over there. In total, we give just over £2.3 million to charities, of which £450,000 goes to those based in the UK.

Are there any particular organisations you support? Three years ago, we started our PowerPartners relationship, supporting four charities: the RNIB, the RNID, NCH and Age Concern. Our workforce helped us choose these. We support the initiative by matching employee donations. More than £1 million has been raised in this way since then.

Do you consider approaches from organisations or not? I get calls every day from charities but unless they're linked in some way to Scottish Power, they aren't considered.

What is a good way to approach you? To provide a well-structured case, preferably including educational benefits or a scheme that improves accessibility. It also helps if there are business benefits for us.

What is the most annoying thing about being approached? Ignorance and laziness. Ignorance about what we do. Laziness in just sending us photocopied letters.

What information do you like to have about organisations you support? As much as possible. It's incredibly important for us to visit the projects and meet the people who make it work.
