FUNDRAISING NEWS: WHY WE GIVE - Lord Pendry, chairman of the Football Foundation

The foundation was set up two years ago to revitalise the grass roots of football. The foundation also delivers educational and social inclusion projects.

Approximately how much do you give per year?

Our annual budget is £53 million provided by our funding partners: the FA Premier League, the Football Association, Sport England and the Government.

Are there any particular causes or organisations that you support?

We support a variety of organisations including charities, local authorities, schools, sports clubs and government agencies. Recent examples are awards totalling £1.3 million to eight Positive Futures Programmes throughout the country and a £583,050 grant to Liverpool City Council to renovate an inner-city football complex. We have also funded a homeless football project, "the street league", and a two-month refugee education and football programme.

Do you consider approaches from organisations or not?

We welcome any approach from organisations within the voluntary sector and have funded more than 100 groups from the public and charity sectors.

What information do you like to have available about organisations or projects you support?

Our new application forms and guidance notes steer potential recipients through the various sources of information we require to assess schemes.

They can be found on our web site at www.footballfoundation.org.uk or by ringing our helpline on 0800 027 7766.
