Approximately how much do you give per year?
We donated £5 million to the community in 2001/02 through charitable and educational donations, sponsorships and gifts in kind.
Are there any particular causes you support?
We give in lots of different ways, all of which are aligned to the wellbeing direction of our business. Our charities of the year are Breast Cancer Care and WellBeing, a health research charity for women and babies. We support smaller community projects through joint initiatives and 2,300 community and charity groups received surplus and repaired goods from our recycling project during 2001/02. Our staff spend around 50,000 hours volunteering in the community.
Do you consider approaches from organisations or not? Are you a reactive or proactive grant-giver?
We are, in the main, a proactive giver. We tend to approach organisations that we can work in partnership with to deliver real benefits to the community.
Our Charitable Trust accepts appeals from voluntary and community organisations working in Nottinghamshire.

What is the most difficult thing about being approached?
As with any business, we have finite amounts that we are able to give to the community. We receive many approaches and it's never easy to explain to organisations that we are unable to help, however much we'd like to do so.
