Andy McKay heads up the corporate social responsibility unit at Sponsorship Consulting, a marketing consultancy. He spent five years working in the voluntary sector before taking up his current role.
Which charities do you help and how? I support Hope and Homes for Children.
When I first attended one of its fundraising events, I was impressed by the positive and genuine long-term difference it makes by providing loving families and homes to children whose lives have been torn apart by war, genocide and HIV/Aids.
How much time or money do you give per year?
I prefer to give tax efficiently and have a standing order that obtains Gift Aid. I help organise several events each year, the most recent being a charity night at a greyhound meet, which raised £3,500. I also support a local school as part of Sponsorship Consulting's staff volunteering programme.
What qualities do you bring to the charities that you help? I hope that my 10 years' experience of fundraising and sponsorship have proved useful.
My experience of managing a wide range of partnerships between companies and charities can help bring a sense of realism when it comes to the practicalities of volunteers implementing ambitious fundraising ideas and seeking sponsorship for fundraising events.
Are there any other particular causes or organisations you support? I support the 'Battersea Summer Scheme', a local community project, which is run in partnership with the police to provide worthwhile activities for young, disadvantaged people during the holidays. I am also a long-term supporter of the National Missing Persons Helpline, where I volunteered when looking for a job after graduating.
What is a good way to approach you?I do not generally respond to direct mail - personal approaches are most likely to strike a chord.
What is the most annoying thing about being approached by charities?
I find it very intrusive when I'm approached in pubs.
