FUNDRAISING NEWS: WHY I GIVE - Omar Nissar

Omar Nissar, 17, from Rochdale, was a finalist in Greater Manchester Police's Young Citizen of the Year Award. As chair of Rochdale youth club Spotland, Nissar is leading efforts to prevent local youth from getting into trouble and has raised more than £2,500

How did you first get involved?

I was at the club for two years but then saw that people were losing interest so I took over. At that time there were nine people at the club and now there are 20.

What sort of activities do you do at the club?

We get people together for social events, games such as pool and regularly go as a group to the cinema. I have arranged drug awareness and sexual understanding programmes with students from Lancaster University coming in to give advice. There is a lot of bad stuff in Rochdale - this is stuff that people would get involved in if they did not come to the group.

And we don't just benefit young people we also make older people's lives better.

How are you going to use the £2,500?

It is for a laptop for the youngsters to do research and course work.

The problem around here is that most of the young people just do not have access to computers and are unable to learn about them. By having a laptop the word might get around and we might also encourage more people to come to the club.

What other plans do you have?

We aim to eliminate all sorts of racial tensions in the area and get different races into this group. Recently there were riots Oldham and I don't want the same thing to happen in Rochdale.
