Fundraising: Online donations almost double

Online charity contributions have increased by 90 per cent in the past year, according to a survey by Charities Aid Foundation.

Donations made through CAF's online services grew by £3.4m to more than £6.8m over the 2003/4 financial year.

Four out of every five donations processed through were Gift Aided as a result of the foundation's 'efundraising' service, which enables charities to accept tax-efficient direct debit donations from their own websites.

CAF's head of new media, Sarah Hughes, said: "Donors are prompted by media images and information. The internet offers the most immediate response mechanism for giving."
