Fundraising ‘tick' scheme to launch in February

The Fundraising Standards Board will launch its self-regulation scheme to the public on 12 February.

The board is planning a £250,000 campaign across the national and regional press, broadcasters and online media to introduce the public to the scheme and its tick logo, which will be displayed on fundraising material.

The launch was originally scheduled for October 2006, but was postponed because not enough charities had joined (Third Sector, 6 September).

A total of 139 charities have so far signed up to self-regulation. Each will display the board's logo on its advertising and promote the Fundraising Promise – a set of six promises to donors by charities.

Jon Scourse, director of the FSB, urged charities that have yet to commit to sign up.

"We will be letting the public know that charities and organisations that display the logo are demonstrating that they have signed up to the highest fundraising standards," he said. "Membership reassures the public that their trust is well placed, not taken for granted."

The Stroke Association and disability charity the Thistle Foundation this week joined Farm Africa and Sense in displaying the FSB's tick logo on promotional material. Others are expected to display the logo from the New Year onwards.

The recommendations of a steering group of senior fundraisers, convened to iron out concerns about the FSB's eight-page membership contract for charities, are expected to be discussed by the board in the New Year. The board had previously said it would discuss the group's findings at its meeting on 12 December. A spokeswoman said that delays were due to board members’ ill health.

Some charities are understood to have objected to clauses relating to volunteer fundraisers and a requirement that member organisations add a summary of the number and nature of complaints to their annual reports from 2009.
