Getting your charity insured against cyber crime

Help to minimise the financial, reputational and regulatory damage a breach can cause

As charities become increasingly reliant on technology, the internet and social media for fundraising, they risk unnecessarily exposing themselves to cybercrime. Human error leading to lost and stolen paperwork is the primary cause of breaches for charitable organisations and, although increased awareness is important to reduce this, external threats are still a pressing issue.

The most common types of cyber crime for smaller organisations are:

Phishing and Spear Phishing

Phishing emails, websites or phone calls are all designed to steal money. Cyber criminals install malicious software for stealing personal information from your computer. Spear phishing uses information gathered about you from the internet to email you from a trusted source such as a regularly used business or a friend.

Malware attacks

Meaning "malicious software", malware is specifically designed to gain access to or damage a computer without the knowledge of the owner. Malware is now used mostly for creating profit whether this be through forced advertising (adware), stealing sensitive information (spyware) or extorting money (ransomware).

Card-not-present fraud

This is where fraudsters steal a person’s or organisation’s credit card details and use them for their own ends.

Even the most robust cyber security cannot fully prevent cyber crime, and malicious volunteers or cyber extortionists could strike at any time. That’s why it’s becoming more and more important to have a comprehensive cyber insurance policy in place to help you to minimise the financial, reputational and regulatory damage a breach can cause. Arthur J Gallagher’s cyber policy includes cyber crime cover and comes with additional added services such as a 24/7 breach response hotline, allowing you to react to any potential breach in a quick and efficient manner.
