GuideStar database taken over by the Wilmington Group

Specialist publisher acquires the assets of the charity financial data website, but previous owner GuideStar International keeps the rights to the site and trademark

The GuideStar database has been bought by the Wilmington Group, the specialist charity publisher and data provider that owns CaritasData and CharityChoice.

The database, set up to provide more transparency about charities' financial data, was previously owned by GuideStar Data Services, a community interest company.

Wilmington has acquired the assets of the company from the administrators, Maidment Judd, but not the company itself.

A spokeswoman for GuideStar International said her company retained the rights to the website and trademark.

GuideStar Data Services was initially owned by GuideStar International, which sold it in March to the Directory of Social Change, but reacquired the rights to the brand after the CIC was placed in administration in October.

Polly Avgherinos, managing director of Wilmington’s business intelligence division, which controls its charity data services, saidthe company already had a lot of expertise in managing charity data, and felt it would be able to reduce the costs of managing the data that GuideStar made available.

"This is a strategic purchase for us," she said. "We’ll look at the data and decide what we want to do with it. It fits well with the existing services we provide."
