Hospice raises riches with a little help from WAGs

Anyone who has read Hansel and Gretel might be uneasy about the record of witches with children, but staff at a Wirral children's hospice were cackling with delight after a 90-strong coven raised more than £3,000 for its beneficiaries.

The witches - Women in Touch with Claire House - attended a fundraising lunch at a Chester hotel after the Claire House Children's Hospice won a competition to hold the event there.

Guests included the wives of former Liverpool footballers John Barnes, Jan Molby and Michael Thomas.

Organiser Jane Kirkham said the money would pay for a tropical fish tank and a juke box for the hospice. "We would like covens of witches around the north west," she said. "Wizards are also welcome."

Entertainment included a flower demonstration from the Welsh College of Horticulture. There is no word on who swept up the stray petals, but presumably there was no shortage of broomsticks.
