Hugh Brasher, son of London Marathon co-founder Chris Brasher, will replace Dave Bedford as race director of the event by 2013, the organisation has announced.

Brasher, who has been a director of London Marathon since 2008, will work alongside Bedford from January as part of a gradual handover of the role. He will be joint race director in 2012 and is then expected to take sole responsibility for the position in 2013.

He is currently the chief executive of specialist running retailer Brasher Leisure, which operates a chain of stores under the name Sweatshop, but has worked for London Marathon in some capacity in all but one of the events.

A spokeswoman for London Marathon said Brasher was not making any comment on his position at Brasher Leisure until he starts doing media interviews in November.

Bedford, who has been race director since 2002, said in a statement: "There were a number of very strong applications for this role. However, Hugh Brasher, through his business experience in sporting events and understanding of the sport from every angle, was head and shoulders above the other applicants."
