This striking image of an old loading shovel has taken the top prize in a photography competition ran by the social enterprise Giveacar.

The organisation, which sells donated scrap cars and gives the money to charity, asked photographers to enter its online competition, called Scrap is Beautiful, by sending in images of vehicles past their best.

Photographs received by the organisation varied from rusty old cars to old military units. The charity hoped to raise awareness of how many cars are lying around their potential for raising money for charity.

Stephen Elliott, of Hope Valley, Derbyshire, was chosen as the overall winner and received £500. He took this image of an old loading shovel that had been rusting away for years in a farmer’s field just outside the village of Eyam, in the Peak District, Derbyshire.

The charity has recently succeeded in raising £500,000 for charities since it was set up in 2010 and hopes to reach £1m next year.
