INSTITUTE OF FUNDRAISING: Codes now to be published separately

The key part of our submission rests around the Codes of Fundraising Practice. These documents are at the very heart of the organisation since members join to sign up to the best of practice in fundraising.

Individuals take these standards with them as they move from organisation to organisation. Many organisations use them as a management support to introduce a best practice culture across their organisations.

This month will be the first time these codes will have been published as a separate stand-alone document. Until now, they have been printed in full each year in the member's handbook. Many organisations already make extensive use of them, publishing them on intranets and incorporating them into their own policy procedures. They are also available on our web site and are free to down load (although at 200-plus pages it will be expensive to download them all).

Getting this first full print run out is designed to generate and increase debate about the codes. As documents they are evolving, and as legislation changes and new ways of fundraising are introduced, the codes will need to be updated and modernised. I hope that putting them out into a wider domain gives us a real headache of considerable comment, not just about what they currently say, but where the gaps are.
