Institute of Fundraising considers campaign against abolition of cheques

It is asking its members how they will cope with plans by the UK Payments Council

The Institute of Fundraising has written to its members to ask whether it should lobby the Government against plans to phase out cheques by 2018.

The email asks members whether they think they will be able to convert all of their cheque donors to using other methods before cheques are phased out. The UK Payments Council has proposed that this should happen by 31 October 2018, if suitable alternatives can be developed.

The institute's message also encourages members to lobby MPs against the plan if they are concerned it will affect their income, and informs them about an early day motion tabled by Liberal Democrat MP Mark Hunter against the planned abolition.

A spokeswoman for the institute said: "If there is enough pressure from our members about the issue, we will take further action."
