The Institute of Fundraising will launch an online portal early next year to bring together research on fundraising, according to Peter Lewis, its new chief executive.
In an interview with Third Sector, Lewis said the institute wanted to bring together all the research that had been done on fundraising and identify where more was needed.
"I think there is a lack of research around the fundraising agenda," he said.
Lewis said a four-stage process will establish what research had already been done, collate it in the portal, work out where the gaps are and examine the funding options.
He said the institute would ask academic institutions and big charities for permission to allow it to have their data on its website.
"It’s bringing together a portal of research and evidence so that at least people can get easy access to the research that exists," said Lewis.
"There are some clear gaps in our understanding of giving. I think the IoF should be leading on the agenda of increasing giving."
Lewis said more research was needed on why poorer people gave a larger proportion of their wealth to charity than the rich, and how richer people could be motivated to give more.
He said the portal would be part of the institute’s new website, which will be launched in January.
