INSTITUTE OF FUNDRAISING: If you want to get ahead, get qualified

Fundraising is a funny job. The core skills necessary to be a good fundraiser are essentially the same as those required in many walks of life.

But because most of the skills needed are inherent and difficult to teach, it is regarded as a risky business recruiting somebody without a proven track record. Many people wanting to move across to fundraising suffer the "Equity-card

syndrome. You need one to act and you can only get one if you have acted. As a result there is a real premium on fundraisers with a proven track record.

How do you know that their track record is all it's cracked up to be?

Just how much of the impressive performance on that CV was really down to that individual as opposed to the team and culture as well as the cause?

You will only really find out if you hire them.

However, if you recruit a fundraiser with the initials MInstF (Cert) after their name then you know that their experience has been independently assessed. About 10 per cent of members now have the Certificate in Fundraising Management and growing numbers are putting themselves forward for assessment. These are busy people like Bill Giles, who has written the members' view column on the right this week.

This is an investment that could be worth its weight in gold as more and more employers cite the qualification in their job ads.
