Interpal subject of 'terrorism' inquiry

The Charity Commission has launched a formal inquiry into Interpal, a UK-based charity that provides aid to Palestine, to establish whether it has any "indirect or inappropriate links" with the country's ruling party, Hamas.

The commission said it would look into Interpal's connections with individuals who appeared to support the party's "militant or terrorist activities".

The investigation was prompted by a BBC documentary aired last July.

"The material made available raises serious issues," said a commission spokeswoman.

Ibrahim Hewitt, chair of Interpal, said: "If there is no political agenda behind this investigation, then I am confident we will be cleared."
