Jon Trickett has replaced Tessa Jowell as shadow secretary of state for the Cabinet Office in a reshuffle by the Labour leader Ed Miliband.

Trickett is Labour MP for Hemsworth in West Yorkshire and was previously a junior shadow Cabinet Office minister. He was Gordon Brown’s parliamentary secretary between 2008 and 2010.

Jowell, who was shadow secretary of state for the Cabinet Office and for London and the Olympics, retains her London and Olympics briefs.

Six MPs elected last year have entered the shadow ministerial team in the reshuffle.  Miliband said: "I am determined that my shadow cabinet not only holds this government to account but speaks to the public and the country.

"Families across Britain are worried about how they will make ends meet, anxious about what the future holds for their children and tired of the way irresponsibility is tolerated across our society."

Trickett was unavailable for comment.
