The online fundraising site JustGiving will waive its administration fee on donations made in honour of Claire Squires, who died while running the London Marathon to raise money for Samaritans.

Squires had set up a JustGiving page that has been flooded with donations since news of her death emerged. This morning the total stood at more than £625,000, plus Gift Aid totalling more than £135,000.

A spokeswoman for JustGiving said it had agreed to waive its usual 5 per cent administration fee on each donation, including Gift Aid.

With the total amount raised about £750,000 including the Gift Aid, she said, the fee waived so far totalled £37,500 – but this figure was continuing to rise.

"The response to Claire Squires’ tragic death on Sunday has been extraordinary," said a statement on the JustGiving website. "Out of respect for Claire’s memory, we will be donating our fees back to Samaritans."

The spokeswoman said she did not know whether the additional 1.3 per cent credit card fee on donations would be waived, because this money was taken by separate companies.

Samaritans said earlier this week that it would launch a tribute fund in honour of Squires.
