Lawyer appointed new chair of YMCA

YMCA England has appointed a new chair and an additional vice-chair as it attempts to recover from the back-to-back departures of its two most senior people.

Board members have elected Tim Waldron, a current board member and head of the charity and community team at law firm Coffin Mew LLP, as its chair. Fellow trustee Juno Hollyhock has been appointed as a second vice-chair alongside Linda Sharpe.

The move comes after David Bedford, the former chair, and Angela Sarkis, the former national secretary, left the organisation within days of each other (Third Sector, 16 April). The new appointments will run until YMCA's annual general meeting in November.

A YMCA spokesman said trustees would carry out a strategic review of the role the organisation plays in the YMCA movement and the national secretary's position. He added that an interim national secretary would be appointed and would play a part in the review.
