Lessons in how to lead volunteers

Volunteering England is to launch a new training course for volunteer managers to encourage charities to take the role more seriously.

The Excellence in Volunteer Management Programme will be launched at the London Tools of the Trade conference next week.

Those who complete the course will gain a qualification from the Institute of Leadership and Management. Participants will be able to choose from different modules.

Barbara Regnier, director of volunteering management and leadership at Volunteering England, said: "We hope this programme will encourage organisations to recognise the importance of volunteer management and the skills that are required to do it well.

"We don't believe it should be compulsory to complete such training, but there should be opportunities for those who want to turn it into a career."
